Youth Services : South Windsor Safe Home

The South Windsor Safe Home is a Connecticut Department of Children and Families licensed and funded safe home that provides residential services to children between the ages of three and 12. Services are directed toward children and sibling groups who are experiencing an initial placement from their home due to allegations of abuse, neglect or abandonment.

A specific goal of this program is to keep sibling groups intact when placement is required. The program when appropriate, will accommodate a member of a sibling group below the age of three and above the age of 12. These children may be in crisis and experiencing trauma and loss as a result of immediate involuntary removal from their parent or guardian through a court order.

The program has been designed for a 30-day length of stay. Referrals are accepted from the North Central Regional Office of the Connecticut Department of Children and Families.

A number of local organizations have generously supported the South Windsor Safe Home through the donation of program materials, movie tickets, holiday gifts, meals and entertainment. These community linkages send a strong message that the children belong to the whole community. If you would like to donate to the South Windsor Safe Home, visit our online donation form.

Program Goals

  • To provide a safe and nuturing home environment.
  • To help children develop a positive sense of self.
  • To prepare children for their next placement.
The typical day at the safe home is a reflection of what might be found in a stable home environment. Group activities are encouraged and include: educational projects, arts and crafts, structured recreation, family style meal times, evening activities and age appropriate group discussions with the children that focus on important issues.

Most children placed at the South Windsor Safe Home are able to continue attending their own schools, some children are enrolled in the local school system. Additionally, all children receive multidisciplinary assessments through local health clinics. These assessments ensure that all medical, dental and mental health concerns are identified and addressed. The safe home provides clinical and nursing support as well as aftercare services.
